If someone asked me to name the three most essential elements in the writing of flash fiction, I would not hesitate to answer.
Conciseness because there can be no unnecessary words and the writing must be tight. Omission because you can’t put in everything you would like to put in. Suggestiveness because you have to imply a lot of what is going on in the story.
I would say that these are the three most important elements of a successful flash fiction story. It’s nice to be able to list these elements, because a writer should be conscious of the workings of his or her craft. In the heat of creation a writer may forget a lot of things, but when it comes time to polish the story, a writer had better have a pretty good understanding of craft.

Hello hello hello, my brother and sister readers and writers from all over the world! It’s freezing in Pittsburgh. Actually, it’s several degrees below freezing. The Old Soldier walked down to the CVS on the corner for milk and a couple of Little Debbie Cakes and now I’m in for the rest of the day.
I won’t be going to Armand’s in Little Italy for a couple of beers today. When the Old Soldier has money in his pockets but doesn’t visit Armand’s for a couple of beers, you know it’s cold outside.
Although, Sonny’s Tavern is only two blocks away. I usually don’t go to Sonny’s anymore because the draft beer that I drink is 50 cents cheaper at Armand’s and 50 cents a draft can add up. Remember I’m a businessman, an entrepreneur (editor/publisher). I have to cut costs where I can. You say, why don’t I just stop drinking? Do you want me to flip out? Do you want me to just stay in my apartment and stare at the four walls? And a lot of things go on at Sonny’s at night: DJs, live music, media events…Maybe I’ll just slip out to Sonny’s for a little while. Two draft beers are not going to break me. And the sun is shinning.
This is the Old Soldier reporting from near the University of Pittsburgh on a cold but sunny afternoon.
P.S. When erotic flash fiction is good enough, it is art.
