Night came to Pittsburgh around 5:45 p.m. today. The days are short and the nights are long and both are cold. The Old Soldier has assumed his favorite position: on his back on the sofa with two fat pillows under his weary head. I’m sipping on a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer as I listen to my favorite sports show on the radio. The Steelers play the Cincinnati Bengals in about an hour. For the Steelers, it’s a meaningless game. The Steelers are 5 and 8 for the season. The players are now playing for pride and their jobs; which is plenty to play for.
This night is one of those nights for the Old Soldier to take stock of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette. How to make it more reader friendly? Is it informative and entertaining? How to better serve my audience of flash fiction readers and writers?
I think flash fiction has a great future as art and entertainment. I have the flash fiction of two regular contributors scheduled for January 2014: Anna Bayes and Heather Kinnane. Each writer has had several stories published in the magazine.
The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette keeps me busy; but publishing the magazine is a labor of love.
So, if you are looking for a different kind of reading experience, you may want to check out this little online magazine of erotic short stories. I’ll be the first to admit that this magazine is not for everyone. But it may be just right for you.
This is the Old Soldier reporting on a cold night in Pittsburgh.
PS Remember that the best flash fiction short stories are really two stories in one. There is the surface story and the implied story. It is the implied story that gives flash fiction its depth, that allows the reader to be a part of the creative process.
