The streets of Little Italy today are HOT HOT HOT ! It’s hot and muggy outside. It reminds me of Vietnam. I went for a walk this morning through my favorite neighborhood: Little Italy (Bloomfield). I walked past Sonny’s Tavern (it wasn’t open yet) and I turned left on to a brilliantly sunny Liberty Avenue and I strolled down the street taking in all the sights and sounds. Armand’s Bar wasn’t open yet, either; but seeing Armand’s made me sad. After drinking there for years, there’s no reason for me to drink there any longer since Sonny’s is closer and Sonny’s has karaoke every other Sunday starting at 9:30 pm. Sonny’s has karaoke this Sunday. At Armand’s I’ll never be more than a lonely old man trying to get his drunk on. I can be a weekend celebrity at Sonny’s. I’ll probably stop in at Sonny’s on Friday. I should have more fun money within 48 hours.
But I digress…
I subscribe to Problogger. The owner of the site makes a very good living as a professional blogger. His blog is all about how to make money blogging.
Recently, he’s been publishing a series of posts entitled: 31 Days To Build A Better Blog. Yesterday he published post #28 in the series. And I thought to myself, why don’t you do something like that? Why don’t you publish a series called…?…oh, I don’t know…10 Days To Writing Better Flash Fiction…
Well spank my bare bottom and call me a nudist. You know you can’t beat that with a stick!
Hello hello hello hello hello, all you flash fiction writers out there! This is the Old Soldier reporting for duty.
Well, the first thing you need to know about writing flash fiction is that flash fiction has the same form as the classic short story: a beginning, a middle and an ending. I like to put my own spin on the form by saying flash fiction has a setup, a buildup and a payoff (resolution).
So, this post is just to get the series up and running. This post is improvised like jazz, like the long guitar and keyboard solos in the middle of the album version of Light My Fire. The next post in the series will be more thought out and have more meat on its bones. I’ll take my time with it. If you’re serious about writing flash fiction, you don’t want to miss the next installment of…Days To Writing Better Flash Fiction.
This is the Old Soldier reporting for the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette.
