Hello, hello, hello, all you rock ‘n’ rollers! It’s an overcast day in Pittsburgh. The high will be around 73 and there is an 80% chance of rain. I may not even leave my apartment today. I have my books to read and YouTube to watch and Steelers football will be on the radio this afternoon. I refuse to have a television in my apartment; but that’s another story.
Yesterday, the city had some very nice weather for a while and there were big doings going on in Schenley Plaza in Oakland and on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh, too. Some organization was having an outdoor event in Schenley Plaza with recorded music and free food; and Bigelow Blvd. between Forbes Avenue and Fifth Avenue was blocked off because a student organization had brought in a band and was running different events for the students. The band’s equipment was setup on this nice size stage that was several feet above street level. There were so many young people in Schenley Plaza and on the part of Bigelow Blvd. that was blocked off that I actually felt out of place. I never feel out of place at Armand’s in Little Italy because a lot of the customers are baby boomers, too. And I really don’t feel out of place at Sonny’s in Little Italy when I drop in for a beer because even though Sonny’s has a youngish clientele I sing karaoke there the first Sunday night of every month. I’m a participant in the culture of Sonny’s and not just an observer. It makes a difference.
Speaking of singing karaoke at Sonny’s, I plan to be there for karaoke the first Sunday night in October.
Hail to Pitt!
This is Guy Hogan reporting for the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette. All photos of Adriana Lima were sampled from Egotastic All Stars. Now take a moment to checkout my book in the sidebar. The stories in this book got me into the graduate writing program at the University of Pittsburgh in 2003 and won me a $60,000 fellowship that allowed me to finish my MFA in fiction writing at Pitt in 2006. I think everyone with an interest in flash fiction should own a copy. Be sure to save the file.
