Hello hello hello, all you rock ‘n’ rollers and all you fans of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette and karaoke too because I know you’re out there somewhere everywhere and I’m here at my workstation after another restless night on the sofa with two pillows under my weary head this time listening to Penn State basketball and yes that’s right I said Penn State basketball low on the radio and watching more Buster Keaton silent films on YouTube while dozing off and on until the game was over and I turned off the radio but thought about watching more silent films but instead ended up watching documentaries and docudramas on James Joyce which makes sense considering my present obsession with stream of consciousness writing since Ulysses by Joyce was first serialized from March 1918 to December 1920 and then the entire book was published in 1922 with all of this taking place in Paris because the book was considered filth but is now hailed as item number one of the modernist novel done in a stream of consciousness writing style and I’m happy to announce that it was this that finally got me to turn off the computer and to get some quality sack time for a few hours before dawn.
But with the dawn it was time to do my breathing, flexibility and stretching exercises and to eat a small bowl of raisin brain as I paced the carpet and listened to the local 24/7 all news station on the radio then to shower and to sit at my workstation and to get to work and here I am.
Well right now the two radiators are making it too warm in my living room/kitchenette where my workstation is but I get tired of adjusting the radiators so I’ll just be warm for a little while longer until I get some work done…Last night before punching up videos about James Joyce I Googled him…Now I know about James Joyce and I’ve read his work but as I read about him last night I found out more and more and more about stream of consciousness writing…things like the terms “stream of consciousness” and “internal monologue” may be used interchangeably yet they are really two different things for stream of consciousness writing may or may not have proper grammar or even punctuation because it is the raw data of living without being filtered while internal monologue is the conscious mind regulating incoming and internal data and there are even more schools of thoughts and other literary terms that mean different things about a continuous flow of words on the page which is something I did not know…And there is cross-pollination so that you can combine different kinds of “spontaneous” (as Jack Kerouac called it) writing which I think is what I’m going to have some fun with making clarity of meaning no matter how the words flow high on my list for my own stream of consciousness writing.
The word “Snow” is in the title of this blog post…Pittsburgh is not expecting snow anytime soon but snow is definitely on the way in maybe two or three or four or five weeks it is on the way and one reason that snow is on my mind is because coming back from karaoke at Sonny’s Tavern one Sunday night a couple of years ago I was tipsy and even though my apartment building is only two blocks away from Sonny’s Tavern I have to cross a bridge to get home and we all know during the winter time bridges freeze before the road does because the freezing wind blows over and under the bridge…well on this particular night the bridge was covered with ice and I fell chipping a tooth.
So ever since as winter approaches I am very aware of when the first snow fall will be because I am too old to be falling even though I am very lucky very lucky very lucky to have excellent medical insurance with full Medicare part A coverage and with Veterans medical insurance covering everything else…Still I don’t want to fall to begin with so I’m watching the weather report closely to see what the weather will be the first Sunday night of December when I plan to be back at Sonny’s Tavern for karaoke and I also have to make sure that I get my sleep before karaoke and not to drink too much beer before I get to karaoke or I’ll miss karaoke in December like I did the first Sunday of this month which was really embarrassing and shows a real lack of self-control and that is never a good thing when you have to perform either as a blogger/writer or as a karaoke artist yes I said artist because it is my contention that karaoke is not only just for fun but it can also be an art form but if my legs are too wobbly from insomnia and an excess of beer I’m betraying my own art form and my own theory of art.
Since I did not make it to Sonny’s Tavern this month for karaoke I still have a new pair of boots never worn to wear to Sonny’s for karaoke the first Sunday night next month and new boots always make me feel good…Years ago when I was reading glossy magazines trying to figure out how to get my work accepted by them (this was when I submitted stories by snail mail) I sent stories to Redbook and Good House Keeping and other magazines that were considered “Women’s” magazine because they published short stories and sometimes they would publish stories written by men and these magazines paid top dollar and I would also read fashion magazines like Vogue and Cosmopolitan because I wanted to know what “Women’s” magazines were all about…I never did get accepted by any of the women’s magazines but I did come across a phrase that has stuck with me ever since and paraphrasing now…if you have the right hair cut and the right shoes you can wear anything…For me the right haircut is a shaved head and the right shoes are a new pair of boots.
Hail to Pitt!
Today in Pittsburgh there will be a mix of clouds and sunshine with a high around 58 and only a 10% chance of rain: walking weather. As the weather gets cooler and cooler there are fewer and fewer people in Schenley Plaza. When I went to return and to get more books from the public library yesterday there were very few people in Schenley Plaza. And I don’t like to walk in cold weather. So, I think I’ll try to get out for a walk today. The new issue of Pittsburgh City Paper, the local free print weekly about local culture and politics, comes out every Wednesday. I always like to have an objective for my walks. I’ll get a copy of the PghCP.
