Yes, the Old Soldier was surfing YouTube last night. I came across the video: The Doors Soundstage Performances. And there was the band (they were so young) in 1967, before Light My Fire was a hit, performing live (I think it was in Canada) on this television show in front of an audience (we baby boomers were all young then) sitting in a semi-circle in front of a low stage. The lights were turned down low.
The song was The End. And what made the band unique was all there: the dramatic pauses, Ray’s rumbling keyboard bass, the screaming organ, John’s improvisational drum fill-ins, Robby’s coiling guitar licks and the Lizard King all alone up front, dressed in dark clothing, mysterious, brooding, beautiful and frightening all at the same time, the iconic front man.
I have to make it back to karaoke next month.
