Andy Warhol was supposed to have said, “Art is what you can get away with.”
If Andy Warhol didn’t say it, it sure sounds like something he would have said. And what can we writers learn from Andy Warhol about the art of erotic flash fiction? That a flash fiction story about sex can be art, too, if it’s good enough.
Warhol shot a film titled, Blowjob. Yes, it was about a young man getting a blowjob. The camera stayed focused on the actor’s face the entire film. That was it. According to Warhol’s definition, the movie was art.
As I reflect on Warhol’s definition of art, I get the feeling that the subject of a flash fiction story is not important. What is important is the concept of flash fiction itself. Flash fiction is an art form. It makes great demands on the imagination, talent and skill of the writer who practises the form.
Yes, flash fiction is art. And art is the message.
