The Old Soldier is a baby boomer. Baby boomers are usually considered to be people born between 1946 and 1966, the counter-culture generation. The pundits have said we baby boomers refuse to grow up. One look at this magazine that I publish and you might agree with the pundits.
Of course, I don’t look at it that way. A lot of baby boomers don’t look at it that way. I’m just still passionate about rock ‘n’ roll (especially classic rock ‘n’ roll like the music of The Doors) and I’m still passionate about other things like history, politics, karaoke and writing. I still lust after women.
If maintaining, and adding on (karaoke), the passions of your youth means you refuse to grow up, then I’ll probably never grow up. Maybe the pundits were right about baby boomers.
Our Man In Pittsburgh
The Old Soldier is going to stay in doors today, it’s overcast and the high will be around 33, to make out bills, to take care of a few editorial duties, to maybe defrag and then run a scan on my computer and just to read and relax.
Tomorrow I’ll send the bills by snail mail and then I’ll march into Little Italy twenty minutes away to sit in Armand’s at the bar and to sip draft beers and to think deep thoughts about life and writing. That should start the new year off right.
Armand’s carters to an older crowd (40 and up) and whenever I get there before noon I pretty much have the bar to myself except for maybe one or two other retirees. It’s a good place for sipping draft beers and for watching Liberty Avenue out front.
Not like karaoke at Nico’s in Little Italy on Saturday nights where the average age is in the twenties and the place is dark and usually crowded (it feels like a cool club), and I love karaoke at Nico’s. It’s the best karaoke bar I’ve ever been to in Pittsburgh and I’ve been to several over the past twenty years.
This is your favorite baby boomer reporting from near the University of Pittsburgh.
