Hello hello hello all you rock ‘n’ rollers and welcome to today’s edition of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette…the online magazine of culture for adults only and what a glorious Autumn day it is today in Pittsburgh…a day for walking with plenty of sunshine and a high around 55 and no chance of rain and not only that. The Pitt Panthers went into Death Valley yesterday and beat the No. 2 ranked Clemson Tigers 43 to 42 in a wild football game that was decided only in the last six seconds of the game.
Even as I was flat on my back on the sofa with two pillows under my weary head reading Factotum by Charles Bukowski I couldn’t help but listen to the game on the radio too. So Bukowski has gotten me out of my blogging slump and the Panthers came through with a huge upset and now the sun is bright and I may even decide to get in a good walk today down to Schenley Plaza and around the campus of the University of Pittsburgh and then come back to take up my position on the sofa and to listen to the Steelers on the radio later today as I continue my reading of the novel Women by Charles Bukowski.
Women has so much fucking and cock sucking and eating pussy in it that I thought I was reading a novel by Henry Miller but it was a novel by Charles Bukowski all right and the writing was much more straight forward than the writing of Henry Miller and I’ll take straight forward writing any day of the year because my own writing is pretty straight forward even if now I’m in my stream of consciousness phase of writing because of recently re-reading the novels of Jack Kerouac.
A writer should never ape another writer but a writer can always learn from every other writer he or she reads and I’ve learned to be a much more autobiographical blogger/writer from re-reading Kerouac and Bukowski because my own life which is pretty mundane is the only material that I have to deal with…I’ll just have to turn it into “stylized memoir” which is a phrase I did not invent but the writer who did introduce me to the phrase may read this blog post and if he does he knows who he is.
Still the sex in Women is constant and so is the drinking and the betting at the race track and if the anti-hero Henry Chinaski was based on Charles Bukowski (which he was) what a low-life Bukowski was which makes me feel better about my own drinking because I’m a heavy drinker when I have the money which is only like the first two weeks of every month but Bukowski was a constant drunk who would get arrested and spend his rent money on booze which I never do either and you wonder how he got any writing done at all.
Bukowski is an inspiration to me as a blogger/writer not because he was an alcoholic and therefore my own periodic heavy drinking isn’t all that bad but because despite all of his self-inflicted wounds he got his writing done which is all that a writer can ask from himself or herself and because of all the raw sex that is in his work which is a great example for a self-professed blogger/writer like myself who publishes a blog for adults only.
This stream of consciousness blogging has revitalized my blogging and once again I look forward to blogging every day and maybe that’s what the drinking was all about in the first few days of this month which kept me from going to Sonny’s Tavern for karaoke the first Sunday night of this month which I had bought a new pair of boots for and have not worn them yet for maybe my subconscious was telling me you’ve got to make blogging fun again you’ve got to find a way to use your life more efficiently you’ve got to learn how to rock again!
So once again I have the fire in the belly and maybe now I can re-impose on myself that discipline that is so important to constant blogging even when I am drinking…the kind of blogging that will bring me closer to my goal of between 30,000 views and 40,000 views every month…this blog went online February 2014 but October 2016 was the first month this blog went over 30,000 views for a single month at 30,075 which means I’m too legit to quit now.
Hail to Pitt!
The Victory Over Self
The empty screen waits
Sunlight through dirty windows
Once again begin…
