Hello, hello, hello, all you rock ‘n’ rollers! I’m reporting for duty. We are going to have a mix of clouds and sunshine today in The ‘Burgh with a high around 80 and a 60% chance of rain. I don’t know about you, but the weather really impacts my mood.
The Sun Also Rises
Last night I assumed my favorite position which is flat on my back on the sofa with two pillows under my weary head and I turned off the radio and put in my ear buds and watched the 1957 film The Sun Also Rises on YouTube. Yes, the movie was based on the novel of the same title written by Ernest Hemingway. The film starred Tyrone Power and Ava Gardner. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read the novel. As far as I could tell the film stayed 95% true to the novel and it seemed to me to be excellent in its depiction of a WWI veteran (Jake Barnes) who is desperately in love with the heroine (Brett Ashley) who is desperately in love with him; but they can’t consummate their love because of a wound Jake received in The Great War that has made him impotent. Talk about a great premise for a novel! For me the highlights of the film were its depictions of the nightlife of the Left Bank of Paris in the middle of the 1920s and the bullfights in Spain (that were actually shot in Mexico). I will definitely be watching this film again; but I’m sad to report that Hemingway didn’t like the movie. Oh, well.
But I digress..
Baseball And Football
It is the general consensus of the local media that the Pirates will not make the playoffs this year. Baseball fans in Pittsburgh are not happy. There are simply too few games left in the 2016 season and the Pirates are too far out to make the playoffs unless there’s a miracle of some kind. The postmortems have already begun. I listen to disgruntled Pittsburgh baseball fans calling into the local sports radio show; and I’m getting a real education in sports fandom…
But the local college and professional football teams, the Pitt Panthers and the Steelers, are off to a bang up start of the 2016 season, both teams winning their opening games. There is still joy in Mudville.
Hail to Pitt! Let’s go Steelers!
