The adventure continues! Hello hello hello, all you rock ‘n’ rollers! The Old Soldier is reporting for duty. A new day of blogging has begun. Three inches of snow fell on Pittsburgh last night and it stuck. I can see it on the ground and on the roof tops and on the backyards of my neighbors from my second story windows. The man on the radio says today it will be mostly cloudy and breezy with a high of only 29 with the possibility of snow flurries.
Why am I so concerned with the weather?
Well, when you get to be my age you don’t want to fall. Older people don’t bounce as well as young people do. So, I keep an eye on the weather especially if there is a possibility of ice or snow on the ground. And here’s another thing. I have an aesthetic interest in the weather as a blogger and a writer. The weather is a part of the environment we all live in. So I have to report on the weather…
I always look forward to spending time at Armand’s in Little Italy to drink a few beers and since I don’t own a television to watch the game shows on the television at my end of the bar were I usually sit on a high stool next to the big window so I can keep an eye on the comings and goings on Liberty Avenue and to socialize with some of the regulars who sit on high stools at the bar down by the big window, too.
But today is a special day. One of the regulars who is a Vietnam War veteran like I am is going to let me have some bluejeans he can no longer fit into. He says the bluejeans are in good condition. He is financially much better off than I am. I spend very little money on clothing. And I need new pants. He was at Armand’s yesterday with a package for me but I missed him. He comes in early and I arrived yesterday later than I usually do. He told the bartender he would bring the package again today. So today I want to be at Armand’s around 10:30 this morning. If I can wear any of the pants it will save me money.
And you know you can’t beat that with a stick!
“Now that I’m retired with a secure but very modest income I’ve become very money conscious. Personal finance is high on my list of cool things to be pro-active about. I save money because of different programs I’m eligible for. But you have to search out the programs. Take for instance public transportation. In the State of Pennsylvania you become eligible for a free life-time Port Authority bus pass when you retire and start to collect social security. And although I prefer to walk whenever I can because I like to walk and it’s good exercise there are times when I have to take public transportation. I can’t afford a car. I can’t afford to buy one even if it’s a used car and even if I could afford to buy a used care I would not be able to maintain one. So, I get on the bus and flip open my wallet to show the bus driver my Senior Citizen bus pass and then I take my seat. The pass is paid for by the state lottery.”–Guy Hogan
“I’ve found that the best way for me to be productive as a blogger is to live my life and to pay attention to what’s going on around me and to keep informed about the world we live in and also to make working on this blog the first thing I do in the morning when I wake up. I sit at my workstation and turn on my laptop and I get to work. Blogging is a lot of fun, but I never forget it’s also my job.”–Guy Hogan
