The first of July 2016 falls on a Friday which means I’ll be back on my regular beat in Bloomfield (Little Italy) the first week of next month: Friday morning at Armand’s for that first cold beer of the July campaign and then the first Saturday night of the month at Nico’s Recovery Room for karaoke and then the first Sunday night of the month at Sonny’s Tavern for karaoke.
You know you can’t beat that with a stick!
I not only report on the karaoke scene at Nico’s and Sonny’s, I participate in the scene, too. I am a karaoke aficionado.
I’ve stated many times in the pages of this blog that karaoke is not about good singers. If karaoke was only about good singers, in my opinion there would be no karaoke. To me karaoke is about fun and letting your hair down (if you don’t shave your head like I do). Why do you think karaoke usually takes place where alcohol is being served? Alcohol lowers the inhibitions. I know I couldn’t get up in front of a roomful of strangers and sing if I was sober.
Of course, I also content that given the right circumstances, karaoke can allow you the singer to create a concert-like atmosphere to rival the best barroom band. I believe that karaoke can be an art form in its own right. It’s like theater, doing a one-man or a one-woman show.
I’ll put my theory to the test once again the first Saturday night and the first Sunday night of July 2016.
Hail to Pitt!
