Once a writer decides he or she will write flash fiction on a regular basis, that writer has to start thinking as a writer of the very short story. And that means that the writer has to start to train his or her imagination to recognize situations, real or fictional, that will fit within the confines of the flash fiction form.
This should not be a difficult transition for the writer. And it won’t be if the writer is well grounded in the form of the flash fiction story which can be summed up as: the setup, the buildup and the payoff (resolution).
Of course, a writer who is not serious about writing will seldom write a good flash fiction story. Good writing in any genre demands a commitment to excellence.
So, if you decide to write flash fiction, keep studying your craft the same way you would study biology. Work at improving your skills using all the tools in the writer’s tool box.
