Saw a great video on YouTube last night about Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation and the Beat Writers which got me to thinking about spontaneous writing which Kerouac said was how he wrote several of his own novels especially his breakthrough novel On The Road which I’ve already read several times and will probably read again and again. See in spontaneous writing the writer just let’s the words flow without worrying about grammar or punctuation or really anything except the flow of the words which is what I’m doing right now although I’m thinking about what I’m writing as I type but in true spontaneous writing the writer tries to submerge his or her conscious mind in the flow of the words but I can’t help but go back and correct spelling and grammar because mistakes are underlined in red and they irritate me so I have to go back and correct all mistakes before I can continue to write. I’m no Jack Kerouac.
But spontaneous writing is a very interesting method and philosophy of writing and I think it might be a solution to my need for an endless flow of content for this blog/magazine that I edit and publish. I won’t use spontaneous writing for all my blog posts because as Kerouac might say that would be a real drag man. I just want the method of spontaneous writing to be one of the tools in my writer’s tool box especially when I find myself in a jam for content or for an idea to blog about which happens more than I like for it to happen.
This is rather exciting for me because the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is really becoming a true artistic experiment in girlie magazines. It’s turning into more than just an online girlie magazine and I hope as an artistic experiment it will continue to entertain, inform and maybe even inspire you my readers who are my partners in crime or in this case in art but sometimes crime and art go hand in hand…At least according to the what-is-and-what-is-not-art police.
I’ve also taken to calling the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette a lifestyle magazine of culture for adults only. Well the lifestyle part of the magazine is about my lifestyle which can be described as working class low-brow baby boomer chic. Ha ha ha ha ha I like that one even if you don’t and yes I just made it up myself this very second which I guess is the essence of spontaneous writing. I can get very use to this spontaneous writing because it’s fun for me and I don’t have to sweat blood like I usually do when I work on a blog post and most importantly I hope my experiment with spontaneous writing will be fun for you too.
Yes I will be taking my usual stroll deeper into Oakland today which is already such a beautiful day with the sun a yellow ball of fire in a mainly light blue sky and a projected high of 83 which is really hot in Pittsburgh in October and you can bet I’ll have my plastic water bottle of ice with me as I stroll through Schenley Plaza and around the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
Well I see I’m reaching my word goal of 500 words for this blog post and actually I’m going to go over to more like 600 words but that’s okay because with publishing a 1,000 to 1,200 word blog post every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and a 500 to 700 word blog post every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I just might achieve my goal of 1,000 pageviews every day.
Don’t forget that Naked News has its own category here at the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette. Just scan down the sidebar and the Naked News link is at the very top of Categories! And checkout my book in the sidebar. The stories in the book won me a $60,000 K. LeRoy Irvis Fellowship in 2003 that allowed me to complete my MFA at the University of Pittsburgh in 2006. You know you can’t beat that with a stick.
Hail to Pitt!
