Let us review the synergy of description, dialogue and exposition in the erotic flash fiction short story. My out-of-date The Oxford American Desk Dictionary that leans upright against the wall next to my workstation defines “synergy” as: drugs, organs, etc, that exceeds the sum of their individual effects.
Bang! We’re off to a great start.
All fiction, no matter the genre, is made up of just three things: description, dialogue and exposition. Description and dialogue are pretty much self-explanatory. Exposition just means the writer explains something. If the writer can smoothly integrate the description, dialogue and exposition of his or her erotic flash fiction short story, that writer has gone a long way toward giving the story a depth and a resonance of meaning far beyond the story’s few hundred words.
And when you add in the natural built-in drama of sex, you are talking about what could be an intense experience for the reader.
Description should as much as possible be intentional. In the best description, a white dress (for example) may stand for more than just an article of clothing. Dialogue will advance the story toward its resolution while revealing character and the state of mind of the speaker. Exposition will save the writer time because exposition is summation.
So, as you write your own erotic flash fiction, be aware of how description, dialogue and exposition work together. You will be more successful at integrating them in some stories than in others; but when you do produce a story where description, dialogue and exposition work smoothly together, you not only may have written a piece of good entertainment. You may have created a work of art.
