Yes, your dream of success as a writer of erotica can come true. The Internet has changed everything. It use to be that a small number of large traditional publishing houses controlled national and international distribution. These publishing houses were the gate keepers. They decided which writers were published, which writers had their work offered on a large-scale to the reading public. With the coming of the Internet, the middle man (the traditional publishing houses) could no longer limit access to the general reading public. Dear, gentle reader, success is all about distribution.
The writer can now offer his or her work directly to the reading public.
So your dream of being a successful writer of erotica is really only a click away.
There is a lot of crap on the Internet that passes for writing. Since the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction is a magazine of erotica, let us talk about your dream of being a successful writer of erotica.
It is my contention (I’m a publisher of erotica) that a writer of erotica needs two talents to be successful in this age of the Internet: a talent for writing and a talent for self-promotion. A talent for writing is an obvious requirement, but a talent for self-promotion is more problematic. (I’m learning to get better at promoting this magazine.)
How does a writer of erotica promote his or her erotica?
Well, having a blog and adding content on a regular basis is a good start. Using social media (don’t try to do it all; just get good at one) is a must. Publishing ebooks is cool. Getting someone else to publish your erotica can be a game changer. Because publishing your own erotica can be like masturbation: it feels good but when you’re done you’re still alone.
This post is not meant to be a road map to success. It’s meant to get you thinking seriously about your career as a writer of erotica.
This is the Old Soldier reporting for the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction, an online magazine of local interest, culture and sex as art and entertainment.
