It’s another day in paradise or at least in Pittsburgh on what is a warm mostly sunny day that may or may not see rain this afternoon. I will be back on my regular beat in Little Italy tomorrow.
I’ll pick up a 24-pack of 12-once cans of beer some time after seven o’clock tomorrow morning from the beer distributor right down the street and return home and have a glass of beer and then I’ll do some food shopping at the CVS/Pharmacy right down the street and I’ll return home and have a glass of beer and then I’ll do some food shopping at the dollar store right across the street and return home and have another glass of beer and then I’ll do some shopping for house hold supplies at the same dollar store right across the street and return home and have a few more beers as I surf the web and wait for Armand’s to open around ten in the morning.
Just before ten in the morning I’ll stroll into Little Italy and do some more food shopping at the supermarket in Little Italy and then retrace my steps with my two plastic bags of groceries and stop in at Armand’s for a couple of more beers and some conversation or if not conversation then to watch the game shows on the television that the bartenders always have on in the morning and I’ll watch Liberty Avenue and sip my beers and think deep thoughts on life and mortality and art and blogging and erotic flash fiction.
Then I’ll cross the street and catch a bus back to my apartment where I will put away my groceries while drinking another glass of beer and it’s a funny thing that I never use a glass to drink beer in a bar but I always drink my beer out of a glass at home and then I’ll stroll right down the street to Sonny’s Tavern for more beers and more socialization. Finally, I’ll stroll back home and maybe assume my favorite position flat on my back on the sofa with two pillows under my weary head and sip beer and listen to classical music low on the radio and read more of the short story collection Signals by Tim Gautreaux that I checked out of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and that Jean Michelle who is a talented writer of erotic flash fiction and a fine poet and who is all over the front page of this blog recommended to me or maybe I’ll sit at my workstation and drink a couple of beers while listening to The Animals on YouTube—or maybe I’ll just return home and pass out on the sofa. This is what the first day of every month is like for the Old Soldier.
Hemingway is reported to have said, “You have to live it up in order to write it down.” I agree. Sunday night I’ll be at Sonny’s Tavern for karaoke.
Hail To Pitt!
