I finished reading my library book, On the Road by Jack Kerouac, yesterday. It’s the second time I’ve read On the Road. I read it many years ago and thought it was okay. Now I think it’s a great novel.
It’s definitely an engrossing story and a socially important novel, but what really impresses me (since I publish a magazine of erotica) is how On the Road was written. Kerouac typed it in three weeks on a single roll of paper. Every day he would type to exhaustion and get up the next day and continue where he had left off the day before. It was all about keeping the flow of words going. It’s the same thing I have to do with this blog, keep the flow of words going.
What On the Road taught me about keeping the flow of words going is that a writer (or a blogger) can do it by writing about his or her life. There simply isn’t enough time to make everything up if you need content every day; at least I don’t have the kind of imagination to make things up every day that I blog. On the Road is a transcription of Kerouac’s life. He made very little up.
Now this blog is not a novel. It’s a magazine. And like any magazine it has an ideal reader: a person who enjoys erotic flash fiction as art and entertainment.
But there is more to life than erotica. Much more. And to keep the words flowing I can’t just write about erotica as art and entertainment. I have to transcribe bits and pieces of my life into the magazine as content to keep the words flowing. Like any writer I have to give the bits and pieces form, because this magazine is not about Guy Hogan. I have to filter the bits and pieces through the prism of being a writer and surviving as a writer. It’s a subject I think my ideal reader can sympathize with.
So, to keep the words flowing the Old Soldier will do a lot of autobiographical writing. I hope it will be autobiographical writing that entertains, informs and inspires. After all, On the Road is a novel about the search for meaning in one’s life and we can all identify with that. In one sense we are all on the road searching…searching…searching for what?
Hello hello hello, all my brother and sister readers and writers of erotic flash fiction who live all over the world! It’s the Old Soldier reporting for duty. A thunder-storm passed through Pittsburgh last night knocking down a few power lines. The Old Soldier has power. Guy Hogan is my name and erotic flash fiction is my game. Pittsburgh might get another thunder-storm today and the high will be around 79. Yes, it is definitely late spring in Pittsburgh.
