What does film have to do with being a flash fiction writer?
Years ago, the Old Soldier was a student at the Pittsburgh Filmmakers. This was before I entered the University of Pittsburgh in 1999 as a 50-something-year-old second semester sophomore. (Pitt accepted the majority of the credits of an Associate Degree that I got from the local community college in 1973.)
I attended the film school in the late 80s and 90s. I was in my late 30s, still working dead-end jobs, still hanging out in college bars and still getting my stories back by snail mail. I decided to go to film school. If nothing else, film would give me another subject to write about.
Video was new in those days. I signed up for the Super 8 course. I learned theory, how to use the camera, shot selection, lenses, lighting, sound…all that good technical stuff. I got two certificates. I made several short student films. One film won me an emerging artist award that was worth $350. After I graduated I joined the school as a member and made my only full-length, Super 8 color, sound film that had its public premiere to a standing-room only crowd in the school’s 60-seat screening room. My boss (I was a grillman at a fast-food restaurant), several employees from the restaurant and two of my sisters and my mother were in the audience. I played a serial killer in the film. It was what is known as a “slasher film.” When the film ended, it got a prolonged ovation. A local print weekly gave the film a good review. (Being a filmmaker was a good way to meet women and to get them to take off their clothes because sometimes women were naked in my films. I had sex with two of my actresses. I killed them on the screen and had sex with them in real life. All that fake blood looked real and the fake blade of the knife would disappear into the handle then spring back out when you stabbed somebody.)
So what does any of this have to do with being a flash fiction writer?
I have a fictional alter-ego who shoots gangbang videos. Now the only thing I know about gangbang videos is what I see on the Internet; but my gangbang stories are informed by my Super 8 film experience.
In other words, a flash fiction writer can use everything and anything in his or her experience to inform the creation of his or her art form. Write about what you know; then make the rest of it up.
Hello hello hello, my brother and sister erotic flash fiction writers from all over the world! With a special hello to my readers in the UK. The Old Soldier is on duty early (7:00 a.m.) today. It will be overcast and chilly (high 29) in Pittsburgh today. I’ve moved up the date that I’m going to order my new computer to Friday. And there’s karaoke Saturday night. I’m already doing my breathing and stretching exercises and I have two songs picked out to perform. So, the Old Soldier is full of anticipation.
Keep reading and keep writing that erotic flash fiction.
