Is there some personal issue you can’t stop thinking about? Are you losing sleep because of a situation you don’t know how to handle? Did someone do you wrong? Why don’t you write about it? Why don’t you turn it into a piece of flash fiction?
Let’s see. Have a character represent you and another character represent the person causing the issue. Since we’re talking flash fiction here you only need enough room for one good scene, one good confrontation that captures in a few moments the essence of the entire situation.
If the story takes place in your hometown, let’s say Pittsburgh, make sure there’s some Pittsburgh flavor in the story: maybe the Cathedral of Learning of the University of Pittsburgh. Finally, resolve the scene in a believable way. I write short stories this way all the time. Several of them have been published in other online publications. Hemingway wrote his stories this way. A lot of his stories were published.
After reading several of the stories on this blog, a friend recently told me she kept thinking “Did these stories really happen? Are they real?” I assured her the stories were fiction; but then again I didn’t just make it all up. You don’t have to make it all up, either. Hemingway was reported to have said, “You have to live it up in order to write it down.”
What issues do you have?
PS These suggestions are not rules. They are suggestions. They are meant to get you to think about your own flash fiction.
