He is considered the originator of the modern short story. Before him, the short narrative was not considered a serious genre for a writer. Writers made their reputations with the novel and the poem. Poe is given credit for creating the modern detective story. He was the first one to put down on paper what the aesthetics should be of the successful short narrative. In his own time he was a respected, insightful and sometimes caustic critic of the American literary scene. He edited several magazines, increasing the circulation of each one two and three-fold until the printers decided that his services where no longer wanted because of differences of personality. He left us several brilliant essays, critical reviews, poems and short stories. We still produce movies and plays based on his poems and stories. And finally, he did all of this while suffering personal tragedy upon tragedy during a short life time (1809-1849) that layed the foundation for what we call the modern short story.
This was the genius of Edgar Allan Poe.
The Old Soldier is convinced of the genius of Edgar Allan Poe. Yesterday, I checked out three books from the public library about the man and his work. I’ll be re-reading stuff I already know and some new stuff, too. Either way, I’m sure I will pick up some insights that will make me a better editor/publisher and a better writer of flash fiction.
And hopefully the Old Soldier can help you to become a better writer of flash fiction. Welcome to my humble magazine. Explore the site. Discover just how exciting the flash fiction short story can be.
This is the Old Soldier reporting for the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette, the premiere online publication of erotica for men and women who enjoy art, creative writing, culture and explicit sex all in the pages of the same magazine.
