Woke up and worked a little on the blog while it was still dark outside so when the dawn finally came I was able to look out of each window facing in different directions and was able to see from one window a building and then a little of the parking lot behind the building and out of the other window residential buildings and the backyard of a neighbor. Snow! Yes snow! A little sprinkle of snow on a car in the parking lot and a little sprinkle of snow on the awnings of the neighbor.
No doubt it was cold enough for snow last night which is not a surprise since the forecast for today is for a mix of clouds and sunshine with a high yes a high of only 48 and a 50% chance of rain. My reaction is it’s too early for winter but then again this is Pittsburgh and it is October and the real sign that winter is closing in is that the heat has come on in my apartment. I have radiator heat which is some of the best heat to have and the pipes don’t bang like someone with a hammer down in the basement anymore as it sounded like when I first moved in years ago but building management never I said never turns on the heat until it is absolutely necessary because my heat and everyone’s heat is included in the rent so to save money management does not turn on the heat until it has no choice-or until residents start to complain about the cold whichever comes first.
But it’s no time to panic because we will still have maybe a few more weeks of pleasant weather I hope it just won’t be as warm and the days will not be as long.
I have become addicted to spontaneous writing. It has released something in me which is very freeing allowing me to open up the whole of my conscious and subconscious to put on the page because there is so little thinking to do and no notes and no preparation which is what I do when I put up a blog post on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday I think about what to blog about and then I write it all out in my notebook and then I transcribe it to my blog post but on the other days of the week I just figure out a title for the blog post and then start typing and whatever comes out is what the blog post is all about which is so carefree and so unusual a method of composition for me that I feel like a different person and I owe this breakthrough to lots of writers that I have read over the years like Gertrude Stein and Faulkner and Amy Aimee who has her own category here at the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette and I’m re-reading both of her Good Pussy Bad Pussy Books which seem to me to have passages of stream of consciousness writing in them but there is no doubt that re-reading Jack Kerouac is what gave me the final nudge and encouragement to try what has been called at one time or another stream of consciousness or trance writing or spontaneous writing and although each of these forms of writing have different nuances the basic message is to just let the words flow and you can go back and clean it up but don’t mess with the essence because Kerouac was adamant that your first draft of spontaneous writing was the best draft…Trust yourself your talent your life experience and the years you have put into learning your craft. You have put in years learning your craft haven’t you?…
So this is my post for today done in my spontaneous writing style and now it’s time to get back to reading my Fitzgerald and my Amy Aimee and my Jack Kerouac…
