Hello, I’m the Old Soldier, your friendly editor. I call myself the Old Soldier because I’m a retired Vietnam War veteran. I’ve been writing short stories since high school and I started sending out short story submissions in my early twenties; but I didn’t get published until my 50s. Online magazines began to publish me and then a local print weekly published a flash fiction story of mine or an article of mine about how to write flash fiction every week for about two and a half years. I was paid $30 for each publication. Then the weekly was bought out and the new publishers changed the format and that was that.
I finished up my BA in creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh in 2003, was awarded a K. LeRoy Irvis Fellowship that gave me a monthly stipend of $950 and paid for all of my graduate studies and I graduated from Pitt in 2006 with an MFA in fiction writing.
I’ve been blogging for about 10 years. The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is about five and a half years old (I lost over four years of content, but that’s another story). The PFFG use to be just my personal journal: the life of a starving writer–oh, woe is me; but I began to read about bloggers who made money from blogging and I read what they had to say about making a living from blogging. I knew the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette had to change. It had to have a target audience. It had to be useful and outrageous at the same time. It had to entertain, inform and inspire. I had to stop being a blogger and start being an editor.
Well, the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette may never make any money. To do that it would have to have at least 500 visitors a day and I don’t see that happening any time soon. But it’s a great hobby for a retired Vietnam War veteran to have.
I love being your editor.
