What’s it like being on the inside of this girlie magazine? What’s it like to try to edit and publish a different kind of girlie magazine?
Well, first of all this girlie magazine is a one-man operation. Even though I depend on a team of talented writers to provide me with excellent erotic flash fiction, the magazine has to operate on a small budget; which means I can afford to publish only two writers every month. This means I have to provide the daily content of my girlie magazine. Since I’m retired, I have all day to come up with something worth reading; but it’s not easy.
I want the daily content to do at least one of three things: entertain, inform or inspire.
Who am I trying to inspire? Other writers. Who am I trying to entertain and inform? Anyone who would enjoy reading a different kind of girlie magazine.
Why do I think my magazine is different from other girlie magazines?
Well, of course, this girlie magazine has photos of nude women in it like other girlie magazines; but that’s the only similarity. Other girlie magazines cater to men. This girlie magazine caters to readers and writers of erotic flash fiction. That’s a vast difference and it implies other great differences.
Other girlie magazines focus on things like cars, hunting, boating, sports and living the good life. My girlie magazine focuses on things like writing flash fiction, getting published, karaoke as performance art, two local neighborhood dive bars here in Little Italy in Pittsburgh and on the writing lifestyle.
I believe there is definitely a large audience on the Internet for my humble girlie magazine. Only time will tell if I can reach that audience.
Speaking of a local dive bar, I was at Armand’s on Liberty Avenue twice yesterday. Once before noon and once around four in the afternoon. The morning visit was a quickie, but the afternoon visit stretched into a couple of hours with the Old Soldier re-connecting with a fellow several years younger than I am and with two young women. All four of us have such different lives. And as we conversed and sipped our drinks as we waited for a rain storm to blow over, I realized that I wasn’t thinking about the magazine or about writing.
I must have been enjoying myself.
This is the Old Soldier reporting for the PittsburghFlashFiction, a different kind of girlie magazine.
PS One of the first things I do when I get up is to feature a different flash fiction story on the front page every day. All the better for your reading pleasure.
