Time to blog just a short blog for a Thursday morning and glad the weekend will be here soon. The weekend will be here soon and I’m one day closer to my regular beat in Little Italy. Funny that I think of Little Italy during the last half of each month but I never think of Schenley Plaza while hanging out in Little Italy during the first half of each month. Little Italy for fun. Schenley Plaza for reflection.
But it will be Schenley Plaza today for reflection with a mix of clouds and sunshine and a high of around 75 which is good walking and thinking weather, thinking about life and writing and blogging and politics but never to blog about politics because politics is too divisive and the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is meant to bring people together or at least people who enjoy blogging, karaoke, movies, sexy stories, television, the female nude and some insights into the life of a working class low-brow baby boomer blogger all in the pages of a single online girlie magazine.
Never thought I’d be a blogger. Didn’t start blogging until maybe 12 years ago. Now this blog gets between 800 to 1,000 pageviews every day but the goal and the desire is for at least 1,000 pageviews every day which would put this blog in the top 5% of all blogs in the world if the stats I Googled are true about there being between 120 million to 150 million active blogs in the world: 120 million to 150 million active blogs seems pretty low unless I’m misreading the stats but even so being in the top 5% of all active blogs is still pretty good.
And last night I turned off the radio and took up my favorite position flat on my back on the sofa with two pillows under my weary head and put in my ear buds and watched the 1925 silent film Ben Hur on YouTube and listened to the sound track and really enjoyed the story of this well-directed film that ran a little over two hours. Silent films inspire me. I love the craft and the fact that silent films were a new form of mass media just like blogging at one time was a new form of mass media and although blogging is no longer a new form of mass media new things can still be done with it like the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is a new form of the old girlie magazine and you and I are a part of this experiment in online publishing.
And then there is the Steelers football team which must now win with Roethlisberger out and Landry Jones in and it’s always bad to lose your starting quarterback but this is an opportunity for Jones to make the most of his opportunity as the Steelers Nation holds its collective breath.
Hail to Pitt!

The best flash fiction stories are really two short stories in one. There is the surface story and the implied story. One cannot survive without the other. The surface story takes place on the page. The implied story takes place in the imagination of the reader.–Guy Hogan
