Hello, flash fiction fans. It’s 7:30 am Wednesday. My job interview is six and a half hours from now. I’ll post this, balance my check book and eat breakfast, chili and beans out of a can.
I got the email two days ago that I was granted an unemloyment deferment by the company that holds most of my student loans. Sallie Mae holds the rest. Before I leave for my job interview I’ll phone Sallie Mae and see if I can work something out with them. I’ve already missed one payment.
I can get one more wear out of the suit I have hanging on a hook in my bedroom. I’ll wear one of the ties hanging from another hook. I have two fresh shirts from the cleaners to choose from and I’ll polish my boots before I take my shower and shave.
After the interview I’ll catch a 54C to Bloomfield, Pittsburgh’s “Little Italy” and pick up bread and some lunch meat. I’ll report on the interview when I get back home.
One week from Friday I’ll be sixty-two. I’ve pretty much decided to apply for social security. My biggest fear is losing this apartment. As bad as my credit is I may never be able to rent another apartment if I have to go through a credit check first.
