Hello hello hello fans of my little girlie magazine and welcome to another day of blogging even though I was sleepless last night in Pittsburgh and didn’t get any good sleep until dawn but that’s the way it’s been for some time so I’m use to it but it is part of the problem of my over indulgence in beer because when I have fun money and can buy beer I use beer to put me to sleep. Since I don’t want to neglect this blog the first few days of every month like I usually do when I do have fun money and beer I need to find a solution. You see putting out an online girlie magazine every day is not as glamorous as it seems to the outside world since there is a real and flawed human being doing the editing and publishing.
But we don’t have to worry about fun money and beer for two more weeks and in the meantime I will continue to move The Gazette towards 1,000 views every day and as of this morning the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is averaging 990 views every day for this month so far which means 1,000 views every day for this month is well within striking distance.
Since I couldn’t get much sleep last night even after listening to Monday Night Football on the radio and watching some of the silent films of Buster Keaton on YouTube, dozing off here and there while listening to the game at the same time watching Buster Keaton, after the game was over I turned the radio off and shut down the computer and closed the Venetian blinds of my two windows in my living room/kitchenette and I turned on all the lights and reclaimed my position flat on my back on the sofa with two pillows under my weary head and began reading the books by Charles Bukowski and Jack Kerouac that I checked out of the public library yesterday.
The differences in the writing styles of these two authors is startling…Where Bukowski’s writing style is as crystal clear as journalism Kerouac’s writing style can be murky at times and even though Kerouac’s stream of consciousness writing style has liberated me and allows me to create a blog post simply by coming up with a title and then typing to the title I don’t want my writing style to be murky. I don’t think it is murky because there can be clarity in stream of consciousness writing or what Kerouac called “spontaneous” writing and this leads me to want to investigate other champions of stream of consciousness writing and the only author who comes to mind that I’ve read before who uses stream of consciousness writing is Gertrude Stein. So when I’m done with the two books that I have by Bukowski and Kerouac I’ll be in the stacks at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh here in Oakland where I live looking for fiction by Gertrude Stein although in my mind’s eye she could be murky too but that still does not mean my stream of consciousness writing has to be murky and oh by the way repetition serves a purpose in stream of consciousness writing so I’m okay there…It not only adds flow and beat to the prose which is one of the attractions of stream of consciousness writing but it also helps with clarity too because the clarity is on the page and the reader doesn’t have to work so hard to figure out where he or she is or at least that’s the theory or at least it’s my theory.
The bottom line is where I was suffering from blogger’s/writer’s block I can now sit down at my workstation with only a title and with very little premeditation and just let the words flow until I have a 1,200-word blog post which is exactly the way this blog post is being created and blogging is no longer a chore but it’s fun again and even exciting.
I think every winter I complain about the heat in my apartment. All of the heat in all of the apartments in my apartment building is provided by radiator heat and radiator heat is some of the best heat that I know of or so I’ve been told but there are two problems with the radiator heat in my apartment building…Management doesn’t turn on the heat until like late October (and turns it off in April which can be cold too) and late October can be pretty chilly in Pittsburgh especially at night and the other problem is radiator heat is almost impossible to control because you only have this valve that you turn and that’s it which is not as effective as a thermostat and this usually results in your apartment being too hot or too cold one hour after you adjust the valve. I’m just venting because if radiator heat is the only problem that I have I’m a lucky man which brings to mind a man I saw several days ago who was obviously in bad physical shape and dispirited and wearing these ratty clothes and slip sliding away run over shoes and he saw me observing him as he walked along and after he passed by I walked behind him to my apartment building and he continued on to the next building which has an open garage on the ground floor and as I mounted the stairs to my building he entered the open ground floor garage which takes up part of the ground floor and you can see right into it and maybe it can hold six vehicles and then this man who may have been in his 40s or 50s just turned around to gaze out on the world and I realized he was going to spend the night there.
Once in my youth I was homeless and it is one of the worst experiences (right up there with serving in Vietnam and being a kid and your father being a wife beater) a person can go through and when I saw this man claiming a spot in this open ground floor garage to probably spent a cold night there I felt so sad but there was nothing I could do for him or nothing I could think of to do for him or nothing I was willing to do for him (and what the fuck could I do for him?) so I just continued to my seedy and sometimes too cold or too hot but comfortable apartment…
His shoes worn over
And he looked at me duly
I had a new coat

PS You can image that the Steelers Nation is in turmoil after the Steelers lost to the Cowboys here in Pittsburgh 35 to 30 Sunday afternoon. It leaves the Steelers with a 4-5 record as their hopes of winning their division begin to fade ever so slightly even though there are still seven games left in the regular season; but fans calling into the local 24/7 radio sports show are losing patience. I find it fascinating how passionate people can be about sports. I use to be one of them. Now I just enjoy sports. I enjoy when the Steelers win. Now I’m passionate about blogging.
