The college students are back in school. The Old Soldier just came back from a shopping trip to Little Italy here in Pittsburgh. It’s an overcast morning, the high will be in the 60s. The college students are everywhere, walking to school with packs on their backs.
I wore my Pitt baseball cap. While I was in the back of the supermarket, looking at the meats, a senior citizen pushing a shopping cart stopped me and asked me if I was a Pitt man. I told him I got my MFA from the University of Pittsburgh in 2006. We talked.
He told me he had taught at Pitt for 35 years and had served in the military for 35 years (I guess he taught while he was in the reserves) and now he was retired.
Autumn always makes me think of school. And being a writer of flash fiction, I’ll always be a student of life. Now life is my school.
