I’m a beginner when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimization), but I’ve had to learn more about SEO since I decided to self-host the New Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette. I use to be a blogger. Now I have to become a webmaster. A lot of the things that were done automatically on my old blog platform (WordPress.com) I now have to do myself on WordPress.org.
SEO is how the search engines find your blog. One of the plug-ins that’s available to me here at WordPress.org deals with SEO. With a click, this plug-in will check my post before I publish it.
Every post should have a focus word. This focus word should appear in your title, in the first sentence and several times in the text. The text should be at least 300 words long. If the focus word is the first would in your title, all the better. The shorter your title the better. The ends of long titles are cut off on the page of a search engine.
You should also be aware of a core of search terms that describe your blog. These words will not appear in every post, but they will usually show up in many of your posts (if your blog has one or two core subjects); use them as tags. Try to use different focus words. Go through the alphabet and then start over if you have to (something I have to be more aware of). Of course, your core tag words will pretty much remain stable because the focus of your blog will remain the same.
And the more you update your blog the better. That’s pretty much all I know about SEO for now. I’m still learning.
Writing Flash Fiction
Hello, my brother and sister bloggers, poets, readers and writers from all over the world. Another day of blogging has begun. How’s the writing coming along?
If you are a writer, or like to read flash fiction, you know you can come here for comfort, entertainment and inspiration. Writing is a lonely job. I’m a writer of flash fiction, too. We flash fiction writers have to stick together.
This is the Old Soldier reporting from Pittsburgh.
