SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. But you already knew that, didn’t you?
Hello hello hello, all my fans of flash fiction who live all over the world! Guy Hogan is my name and flash fiction is my game. The Old Soldier (that’s me) is getting an early start this morning. It’s around 8:00 am and it’s going to be a hot (80s), sunny day in the ‘Burgh today.
For a long time I slavishly followed the dictates of SEO in order to increase traffic to this blog. Every post had a focus word or term. The focus word or term was repeated several times in a post; and I never used the same focus word or term twice. And I used other words or terms (tags) on a regular basis that I thought would bring readers to my blog when one of my tags was put in a search engine. I was a true believer in the SEO way even though I found SEO restrictive; but I wanted as many people as possible to read my blog.
Every morning I would get up and check on my Google page ranking according to the focus words and terms that I had used during the week. I must have done this for a year.
And do you know what I eventually found out about the traffic to this blog?
That 95% of the traffic to this blog did not come from SEO. It came from traffic systems like RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Visitors were coming to this blog and becoming regular readers of this blog because of the content, not because of my Google page ranking.
So now I just blog. I don’t worry about SEO. I just try to put up content that I think my readers might enjoy reading. And I’m having a lot more fun as a blogger. And I bet my readers are having more fun, too.
This is the Old Soldier reporting for the PittsburghFlashFiction, an online magazine of commentary, pop culture and sex as art and entertainment.
