The Old Soldier went for a walk this Sunday morning through Little Italy. The announcer on the radio said the high would be in the mid 80s, but as I got ready to leave my apartment the temperature was 57 degrees outside. So, I decided to wear my hoodie.
It was around 8:30 am and not a cloud in the sky. I strolled down South Millvale Avenue, over the bridge, passed Sonny’s Tavern on my left and turned left onto Liberty Avenue. Such a beautiful morning. Birds were chirping. Only a few pedestrians were about. Bicycle riders whizzed by with the sparse automobile traffic.
The Big Idea Bookstore & Café was on my left and West Penn Hospital was on my right. Most of the businesses in the commercial district were closed. Two people were washing and folding clothes in the all night laundromat. It was still too early for Armand’s to be open and a road crew painted white lines on the street at an intersection, their bright yellow/orange jackets adding a festive air to the morning.
The quiet morning was distributed by a siren down the street. I thought it was a car siren until I walked past this dental office. The siren was coming from a small speaker over the doorway. Had someone broken into the dental office? I kept walking.
Across the street, several people sat at the chairs and tables outside of this trendy coffee shop, drinking lattes or whatever they were drinking.
I was on my way to the supermarket at Ella and Liberty Avenue. The rotary blades of a helicopter roared in the quiet morning as it lifted off of the rooftop helipad of the hospital in Lawrenceville a few blocks away.
By the time I came out of the supermarket with my three items, I had to take off my hoodie and stuff it in my bag with my groceries. And as I walked back up Liberty Avenue, Little Italy was slowly coming alive on this lovely spring morning in Pittsburgh.
