Here are some tips on how to survive as a writer. Did you know that 99% of people who consider themselves to be writers do not make a living as writers? They make a living doing something else besides writing (or they have an understanding significant other or an inheritance or some other means of support). And since many pollsters claim that most people do not like their jobs, one of the first things a writer must do in order to survive as a writer is to find a job that he or she likes to do. Of course, this is easier said then done; but it should be part of a writer’s overall strategy to survive as a writer.
A writer needs time to write, an obvious goal but one that can be difficult to achieve especially since most people who are not writers consider writing to be “just a hobby.” And every serious writer knows writing is far more than just a hobby. So another part of a writer’s overall strategy to survive as a writer is to find those people and organizations who are supportive of a writer’s need to write.
A writer must have a professional attitude toward writing. The Old Soldier hates to be the one to tell you, but if you don’t already know it, writing is a job. Sure, inspiration is part of the addiction of writing, but inspiration doesn’t get you published. Craft gets you published. Learn how to use the tools of your craft, from grammar and spelling to punctuation, diction and syntax. You should know that “to” and “too” and “two” all mean something different. Study your craft.
A writer has to survive to get his or her work done.
Hello hello hello, all my brother and sister readers and writers of erotica! A new day of blogging has begun. The Old Soldier wants to hit the streets before the rains come later today. I think I’m pretty much done with my biography of Jack Kerouac. I’ve read most of the book. I don’t need to read how alcohol took over his life. I don’t need to read how he did not survive to get more of his work done.
Something that may help you to survive as a writer is to follow or to sign up for a free email subscription of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction. I’m not kidding. I know there are a lot of naked women in the magazine (what’s wrong with that?) and there’s all this sex (and what’s wrong with that?), but you know what else you will find in this magazine? You will find how to articles on writing erotica. You will find great gangbang stories. You will find insights on how to survive as a writer and all kinds of good stuff that will entertain, inform and inspire you as a writer.
You can’t beat that with a stick!
We writers are all in this together. And I’m rooting for you.
This is the Old Soldier reporting from Pittsburgh.
