The Old Soldier loves to read flash fiction. Don’t you? I sure hope you do; because the flash fiction story is at the very core of the editorial content of this magazine. The words “flash fiction” are in the name of the magazine. Tomorrow I plan to publish “Last Date” by Lori Schafer. (I say plan because I’m very aware of the Peter Principle: Whatever can go wrong will go wrong.) Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that nothing goes wrong.
It is my hope that every poem and story that appears in the New Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette takes the reader on a psychic journey.
When I read a submission I look for a certain level of technical writing skill; but there also has to be a feeling that, “This writer has been there; this writer knows what he or she is writing about.” I’m not looking for a documentary. I’m looking for imaginative truth.
That, my friends, is what the best flash fiction is all about.
