Dateline Pittsburgh: 27 December 2016
Hello hello hello all you rock ‘n’ rollers this is Guy Hogan reporting from the main branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette which is a lifestyle online magazine for adults only and whose lifestyle does this magazine focus on?
Why my lifestyle of course, the lifestyle of a retired baby boomer who is now a full-time professional blogger yes thank you very much and I’m loving it and at this very moment (I’ll transcribe this blog post later into The Gazette when I’m at the library) I’m scribbling this post into my fat pocket notebook resting against my raised legs (I’m in my underwear for those of you who need to know which probably are not many but remember I’ve recently been reading a lot of Charles Bukowski so it fits) as I lay flat on my back on the sofa with two pillows under my weary head and I’m listening to the local 24/7 news station on the radio which at 10:00 p.m. every night broadcast for a couple of hours something called When Radio Was which is old-time radio programs and I’m listening to Frank Sinatra (yes Old Blue Eyes) as the private dick Rocky Fortune and the dialogue is as snappy as the dialogue of any episode of Drag Net for those of you who remember Drag Net…
I’m happy (no delirious) to report that I’ve sold several subscriptions to Mr. Skin/Naked News this month which means I’ll get a nice little check in February 2017 and that’s a boost to the ego and helps to not only fortify my bank account but also my confidence as an online editor/publisher and I can’t wait to get my new (refurbished) laptop in a in a couple of weeks so I can get back to editing and publishing The Gazette the way I in vision it to be…
Yesterday I checked out more books from the public library to go with the books I already have checked out which should keep me waist deep in reading material until well after the new year and what did I check out?
I’m glad you asked that question for I checked out F. Scott Fitzgerald’s first (1920) novel This Side of Paradise (which made him famous at 24 and gave him more money than he had ever dreamed of) and a collection of short stories The Basil and Josephine Stories by him, both books which I’ve read several times before but I can not express to you how much my favorite authors impact what I blog about even if I don’t mention them for a lot of times it’s their attitude toward art and life that comes out in The Gazette (in me) that guides my editorial and publishing decisions and since The Gazette is finally yes finally operating in the black I feel I must be doing something right in giving my insights about life and art and blogging and all that stuff as I continue to publish what is really a running “stylized autobiography” of the minutia (It’s a show about nothing!) of my life as a blogger and as an ageing human being for your doubtful entertainment…
Dateline Pittsburgh: 28 December 2016
Fitzgerald’s prose flows and he seems to pick the exact right adjectives and metaphors to make his prose sparkle with romance which has always enchanted me ever since as a young writer fresh back from the Vietnam War I decided to do away with adjectives and metaphors as much as possible in my own prose under the heady influence of Hemingway and John O’Hara and Raymond Carver because I felt I wanted my prose to be as close as possible to concrete reality (this is why I love the prose of Charles Bukowski) and I felt adjectives and metaphors got in between the reader and reality but then (much later) I realized that Fitzgerald is not interested in reality but in the ability of the romantic imagination to transcend and transform reality if only for a few fleeting hours and this is why I love reading Fitzgerald for the lyricism of his prose and his romantic vision even if at the heart of his paradise is a moral wasteland of social corruption which became more and more of his dominant theme as he got older compared to the exuberance of his youthful prose…
Today in Pittsburgh the cloud cover will give way to patches of sunshine and the high will be around 40.
Hail to Pitt!
Although I won’t be able to put up any photos of nude women or new Naked News videos until I get my refurbished (used) laptop sometime next month because I’m blogging from the library there are still over 140 Naked News videos (and 100s of photos of nude women) on this site. Just scan down the sidebar to Categories and the Naked News link is at the very top!
