I’m retired, but when people ask me what I do, I tell them I’m an online publisher, a full-time blogger. Young people are amused. People around my own age usually ask, “What’s a blogger?”
If the conversation goes any further, I’m asked, “What do you blog about?”
I have several answers for this question. Sometimes I’ll say, “The art of flash fiction.” Or I’ll say, “Flash fiction, culture and sex.” But if I’m feeling a little devilish I’ll say, “Porn as art and entertainment.”
If nothing else, being a full-time blogger has spiced up my conversation. Being a full-time blogger also keeps me up at night. I take my job as a blogger seriously. (I’m actually typing up this post at 6:00 a.m.) My blog is a paying market for flash fiction and poetry. The Old Soldier is not only a publisher, but also an editor. For awhile there, submissions became so overwhelming that I had to limit submissions to certain months of the year.
And then there is the endless struggle to blog every day, to put up content that is relevant to my readership and to increase pageviews.
So, when people ask me what I do, I don’t tell them that I’m retired. I tell them I’m a blogger.
