You know you can’t beat that with a stick!
I’ve published all of these talented writers before. We have a working relationship. See this is what you want to do if you are a writer of fiction and you want to make money from your work. You have to find a paying market (the more the merrier) and then build a working relationship with the editor. How do you build a working relationship with an editor? By following the submissions guidelines and by always submitting quality work.
The reason I’m able to publish a fiction special next month is because some extra funding will become available on the first of July 2016. So, what happens after July? No more fiction in the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette for the rest of the year?
That depends on funding.
I know that’s a catch-all phrase; but I can definitely tell you this. My little girlie magazine will continue to be a paying market for flash fiction.
All right! All right! All right!
Some writers can’t stop the flow of words. More power to them. I’m not one of them. I’ve been writing seriously (ever since I started snail mailing submissions and getting them back with generic rejection notices) for more than forty years. I’ve had a lot of writer’s block; but like constipation, I know that writer’s block, too, will pass.
Ha ha ha ha ha…
I didn’t realize this when I was a young writer. I would go days without a decent writing idea in my head. Back then I would think, is this it? Is this all there is? Will I never write again? This can be a frightening experience when a large part of your identity (a large part of your self-worth) is wrapped up in being a writer.
Spring forward forty years and I’m still getting writer’s block. I’m also still writing. Okay, blogging. Same difference.
So, if you are prone to writer’s block don’t sweat it (unless you’re up against a deadline and then you’re fucked); just take a deep breath, standup and step away from your workstation. Go do something else. Get drunk. Get shagged. Walk through the park. Whatever! The computer will be there when you get back…
