The Old Soldier has been writing fiction longer than most of you have been alive. We writers of fiction often get stuck for something to write about. We even have a name for it: Writer’s Block. It’s taken the Old Soldier a long time to realize that Writer’s Block is a good thing. Oh, yes, it’s a very good thing. It just means that a writer is in-between two good writing ideas.
We writers lead lives that are full of good writing ideas. Writers are students and teachers, topless dancers, lovers, wives, husbands, nurses, boyfriends, mailmen and mailwomen; writers drive garbage trucks for municipalities; we work in supermarkets and on cruise ships; we work for the Parks and Recreation Department in our cities; we are veterans, retirees and caregivers. We are stay-at-home moms and stay-at-home dads.
We are into S&M. We are crazy about sports. We are addicted to porn.
We work in radio and television. We blog. We’ve worked in call centers and we have even been homeless…
Do you get the point? Just look at your life. You have plenty to write about. Just write about what you know and then “make the rest of it up” and you will have plenty of material for your fiction for as long as you live.
