I did not know today was Vietnam War Veterans Day until I opened my Facebook account and saw a news headline. I served in the 1st Cav Airmobile Division in Vietnam between 1966 to 1967 as a 105 mm howitzer artilleryman. In October of 1966 I turned 20 years old.
I’ve thought every day about the war ever since I rotated back home. I have an excellent history of the war in my small personal library. I bought the book many years ago and I’ve probably read the history from cover to cover at least twice a year every year since I bought it.
I don’t know why I read it at least a couple of times every year. The book is a comfort to me for some strange reason. I know I was one of the lucky ones. I wasn’t killed or wounded.
So, my obsessive need to read and re-read my history of the war is a small price to pay.
Hello hello hello, my brother and sister readers and writers of erotic flash fiction! The Old Soldier should be back covering his beat in Little Italy in about 48 hours.
It turned out to be an overcast, mild day in Pittsburgh today. I had no idea what I was going to blog about today. So, I gathered up some pocket change and strolled into Little Italy for a beer at Armand’s. I shot the breeze with Joe the bartender and with Marianne, one of the regulars; but I still could not come up with an idea to blog about.
So I strolled back home, comforted by the knowledge that in about 48 hours my checking account will be bulging with new funds and I will be back at Armand’s, sitting at my favorite spot next to the window looking out on Liberty Avenue, sipping on a draft beer and writing in my notebook.
This is the Old Soldier reporting for the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette, a blog about Pittsburgh, culture, creative writing and sex as art and entertainment.
