No matter what field a person is in, (the arts, culture, politics, medicine, the military, industry, academia, science, porn, online publication…whatever) originality is at a premium. But there’s a funny thing about originality. Since originality upsets the status quo, originality is always resisted even when many would embrace it.
Because originality is resisted, it may not succeed. We only hear about originality when it succeeds. For every Picasso there are many original painters who fail and fail miserably. Sometimes you have to be in the right place at the right time. Talent, perseverance and originality may not be enough. You also have to be lucky.
So, where does that leave the flash fiction writer who is serious enough about the genre that he or she also wants to be an original? This is what originality means for the flash fiction writer.
- A distinctive approach to his or her subject matter.
- A distinctive writing style that is evocative of the subject matter.
- A vision of life that comes through his or her prose.
PS These tips are not meant to be hard, fast rules. They are meant to get you to think about the endless possibilities of the flash fiction story.
