Every so often, I make a point of walking from my apartment in North Oakland into South Oakland near the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh to stand in front of the house where Andy Warhol grew up. He lived on Dawson Street, in a working-class neighborhood.
I stand silently in front of the house for a few minutes. Then I turn and walk back the way I came.
The walk is always an event for me. I’ve read about his life and the impact he had on his time. He lived the life of an artist. He was a provocateur. He made art out of the mundane and the profane. He is my hero.
