When I speak of the challenge of erotica, I’m speaking of writing erotica in the tradition of classic erotica, the erotica that has come down to us as literature.
We writers who consider the erotic flash fiction short story as literature must draw upon literary erotica for inspiration and as a shinning example of what can be accomplished when erotica is more than just entertainment.
Sex has always been at the cutting edge of art, whether we are speaking of painting, sculpture, film or writing. Reproduction is how we all got here; and erotica is the artistic projection of sex.
So, we writers of erotic flash fiction are part of a long and highly respectable literary tradition, even if we sometimes have to write under the name of an alter-ego.
The challenge of writing erotica is not to make the sex hot. The challenge is to make the story worth the reader’s precious time.
This is the challenge for the writer of erotica.
