What are these words that will make your short stories shine? They’re call “concrete sense details.” Concrete sense details are things we can see, hear, smell, taste or touch.
I look for concrete words when I read flash fiction or poetry submissions. There are concrete words and there are vague words. Vague words dilute your writing. Concrete words concentrate your writing. Usually, not always, but usually poorly written flash fiction stories and poetry have too many vague words in them.
One of the things that made Hemingway’s writing so unique when it first appeared was the high concentration of concrete words in it.
This doesn’t mean you should try to write like Hemingway. It does mean you should be aware of the benefits of using concrete words in your own flash fiction stories and poetry.
How To Get More Pageviews
Last night the Old Soldier Googled SEO (Search Engine Optimization). I read the Wikipedia explanation of SEO. It was fascinating. My goal is to increase the pageviews of this blog. My old blog was getting over 700 pageviews every day before it was shut down for too much sex. (Since this blog is self-hosted, I don’t have to worry about how much sex it has on it). This blog is averaging a little more than 70 pageviews every day. Wikipedia’s explanation of SEO gave me some very useful insights about increasing the pageviews of this blog.
