I write flash fiction, a lot of it is erotic flash fiction. I’m also retired which allows me to be a full-time blogger. But if it wasn’t for my social security check and the two pension checks that I get at the beginning of every month I would be homeless. I would starve to death.
Hello hello hello, all my fans who live all over the world with a special hello to all of you in the audience who are writers. The Old Soldier is here to give you some tough love.
I’ve quoted these statistics before and I’ll quote them again: 99.9% of all writers do not make a living from writing. Which means that you will probably never make a living from writing. But if you truly are a writer, you will keep writing. This means you have to be smart about the business of writing.
First you have to make sure that you don’t have to depend on your writing to keep a roof over your head, clothes on your back and food on your table. And then you have to be methodical in building your career as a writer.
Seek out publications that want to publish your work. Publish yourself; and learn to use social media to give your work the greatest exposure possible.
And then maybe, maybe your writing will begin to supplement your income. Like my writing supplements my income.
This is the Old Soldier reporting for the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette.
