You’re a writer and you know you have talent. Everyone who reads your work tells you, you have talent. I say, so what?
Talent is like oil in the ground. You’ve got to get the oil out of the ground for it to do anyone any good. And that could take years.
So, you have talent. What are you going to do about it? Are you going to actually study the craft of writing? Maybe take a few classes or join a writing workshop? How about finishing that novel you started years ago? Or maybe familiarize yourself with half-a-dozen online magazines that accept submissions, and then start submitting your work?
Or maybe check out library books on the craft of writing short stories? Or apply for a position as a columnist at several local print weeklies?
What exactly are you going to do with your talent? Just remember this. Lots of people have some kind of true talent. Millions of people have a real talent for something. Very few of these people will ever do anything about it. And you know why? There’s too much work involved. Too much drudgery.
Too much spade work to do before you get to the exciting part.
You say you have writing talent. I say, what are you going to do about it?
